Strong family ties to footy and art led Rhianna Couzens to a “surreal” chance to put her mark on the Indigenous All Stars clash in Boorloo/Perth.
Nhanda and Wudjari artist Rhianna Couzens created the All Stars gift to Fremantle ahead of the game – ‘Indiya’, meaning ‘star’ in Nhanda language.
“It hasn’t really settled in,” Ms Couzens told National Indigenous Times before the match.
“I went (to the last All Stars game) 10 years ago.
“I think seeing Sonny (Indigenous All Stars captain Michael Walters) hand it over to Freo will be really special.
“It’s a really incredible opportunity, I’m definitely very honored. It feels very special. Until I hand it over to the boys, and until they hand it over on game day, I think that’s when it will really set in.
“I just feel really proud to represent my family on that scale.”
It was her Uncle and respected artist Doug Ryder who taught Ms Couzens to paint as a child.
