Most Lebanese drama producers are currently idle, awaiting potential projects from Arab and Gulf production companies. This stagnation follows the decline of Lebanon’s local drama industry, which once thrived in the 1990s and early 2000s. Back then, Lebanese productions pioneered unique storytelling, tackling love stories and social issues. Prominent writers like Choukri Anis Fakhoury and Marwan Najjar shaped post-civil war Lebanese drama, while veteran directors brought these stories to life with exceptional visuals.
However, over time, the local industry dwindled, affecting actors, directors, and technicians. Many Lebanese actors spent years without offers before the rise of joint Arab-Lebanese productions, spearheaded by MBC and other networks. While these projects revived Lebanese talent, they often featured weak scripts.
With Ramadan 2025 approaching, a key question arises: Will there be any Lebanese drama this season?
So far, the lineup for Ramadan is taking shape, and it seems that local productions will be nearly absent—except for Beldam (written by Nadine Jaber, directed by Philippe Asmar, and produced by Eagle Films). The series stars Maguy Bou Ghosn, Bassam Moughnieh, Badih Abou Chakra, Rafic Ali Ahmad, Sam Faris, Gabriel Yammine, and others.
Beldam is a social drama based on real events experienced by a Lebanese family. Notably, the show was filmed amid the Israeli war on Lebanon, facing numerous challenges but pushing forward despite all obstacles. While it will be the only Lebanese drama in Ramadan 2025, it promises to stand out amid the flood of joint productions, as well as Gulf and Syrian series.
