The season has just finished, but I still wanted to share with you this beautiful experience which will definitely be on your agenda for next winter.
Mandarin Picking, such a fun idea. Ford’s farm is located near Wiseman’s Ferry about an hour and fifteen minutes northwest of Sydney. From May till August, from10am til 4pm, every weekend, Ford’s farm is open to give visitors the opportunity to pick four different varietals of mandarins –Satsuma (seedless and easy to peel), Imperials, Hickson and Emperor, oranges, limes and cumquats.
As you enter through the shed, you’re given a rundown of the areas and a bucket to take to go picking. Wandering around the lush green trees dotted with orange, it is a spectacular place with nearby sandstone escarpments. You can taste as you go and you only pay for what you pick. Once you have picked your fill, you head back to the shed to weigh and pay. There is a selection of the farm’s homemade jams (mandarin and whisky, orange and brandy), honey, and chutneys on offer, too.
Entry is free with plenty of paddock parking. A great day for the family or friends, I totally recommend having a picnic and making a day of it. There are picnic chairs and tables available as well as toilet facilities. There are also farm animals and you can buy feed so that the kids can have a go. Please be advised not to use Laughtondale Gully Road (your GPS will direct you that way). The road is dangerous and difficult to navigate. Travel on Old Northern Road all the way into Wisemans Ferry and when you see the township there is a road on your right (Singleton Road). Simply follow the big yellow signs all the way to the farm. Enjoy your trip!
