On the 94th anniversary of his birth, the spotlight shines once again on Lebanese director, choreographer, writer, and composer Romeo Lahoud, one of the most prominent figures in Lebanon’s artistic history and a true star maker in the world of theater and music. He was also the first to establish “permanent theater” in Lebanon, leaving a lasting impact on both Lebanese and global art.

Born on January 22, 1931, in Amchit Hbaline, in the Byblos District of Lebanon, Lahoud’s artistic journey began at an early age. After attending Saint Joseph School in Ain Tura, he initially studied interior design at “Mozar” University, only to later shift to “Scenographic Mechanics” at the “Montecamodzo” Institute in Italy.

His professional career took off in 1964 when he created a musical operetta for the Baalbek Festival. He quickly expanded his reach by performing at the Olympia Theatre in Paris in 1969, alongside numerous performances in various countries.

One of his greatest achievements was founding “permanent theater” in Lebanon through the massive production “Mawwal,” which ran for 11 months. This was just one of the many works that left a profound mark on the collective memory of Lebanese and Arab audiences. He also revived and developed Lebanese folklore through theatrical performances and dance shows, participating in many international festivals.

Romeo Lahoud passed away on November 22, 2022. Upon his death, the Lebanese Press Syndicate stated, “He closed his eyes on Independence Day, his heart heavy with sorrow for a homeland where he illuminated its heritage.”

Notable Works:

  • “Al-Shallal” at the Baalbek International Festival (1962)
  • “Mawwal” at the Venice Theater (1965)
  • “Majana” at the Venice Theater (1966)
  • “Ataba” at the Venice Theater (1967)
  • “The Coronation of the Shah of Iran” in Tehran (1961)
  • “Farman” at the Baalbek Festival (1970)
  • “Phoenicia 08” at the Martinez Theater (1971)

Awards Received:

  • Order of the Cedar, Officer’s Grade (1995)
  • Golden Medal from the United States
  • “Murex d’Or” from Lebanon
  • Platinum Disc for Song from Greece

Romeo Lahoud is one of the most influential creatives who shaped the artistic landscape of Lebanon over the decades, with his artistic legacy etched in the memories of Lebanon’s cultural history. His work continues to be celebrated and will never be forgotten.
