Hilary Duff is keeping everything open and honest in her family, especially when it comes to childbirth. Long gone are the days of “the stork is bringing you a sibling.” Instead, Duff revealed she wanted her son, Luca, in the room when her second daughter, Mae, was born in March.
Per People, the Younger star revealed on the Informed Pregnancy podcast that “it was kind of important for me [for Luca to be there] because I’m really big on being open and honest with him about how strong women are and what childbirth looks like.” That being said, Duff said Luca walked in “right as I was pulling the baby out”: “He wanted to be there for it, but it happened so fast he missed it.” She said her older daughter, Banks, came in the room ”after the fact.”
Luca is Duff’s son with her ex-husband, Mike Comrie. She shares her daughters, Banks and Mae, with her husband, Matthew Koma. And as a modern family, they don’t condone any female body shame. “[Luca] knows all about periods, and it’s important for me to normalize that conversation with him for all the women that are going to be in his life,” Duff said.
Hilary Duff delivered Mae at home, surrounded by her husband, the doula, her mother, and a team of midwives. She also had an at-home water birth for Banks; Luca, meanwhile, arrived in a hospital.
“I want [Luca] to someday when he’s ready to have a child with his partner or wife or whatever, I want him to be able to respect the way that she wants to be able to have a baby, and if that’s at home, that can be at home, if that’s in a hospital, it will be hospital,” explained the Lizzie McGuire actor. “There’s many different ways.”
